Why Choose an Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeon?

Specialization is a growing trend in cosmetic, plastic and reconstructive surgery that affords patients better outcomes. Since no surgeon can be an expert in every procedure, it makes sense to choose one who has specialized training in a particular area and who many times, has already successfully performed the procedures you need. Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is a subspecialty of ophthalmology dealing with problems relating to the eyelids, tear ducts eye socket, and face adjacent to the eye.

opth_tabanAn ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgeon (also called an oculoplastic surgeon or an oculofacial surgeon), is an ophthalmologist (a medical doctor and eye surgeon) who has completed additional training in plastic surgery as it relates to the eyes and their surrounding structures.

In order to qualify as a Fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, an ophthalmic surgeon must:

  • Be a board certified ophthalmologist by the American Board of Ophthalmology, the oldest medical certifying Board in the U.S.;
  • Have completed a fellowship program in oculoplastics;
  • Have published in the field; and
  • Have passed a rigorous exam.

Each eye surgeon at The Morrow Institute has completed these requirements and is a Fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
