Why Choose an Eye Plastic Surgeon?
Dr. Marshak Featured on PBS's American Health Journal
Specialization is a growing trend in cosmetic, plastic and reconstructive surgery that affords patients better outcomes. Since no surgeon can be an expert in every procedure, it makes sense to choose one who has specialized training in a particular area and who, many times, has successfully performed the procedures you need or desire. Ophthalmic (eye) plastic and reconstructive surgery is a subspecialty of ophthalmology dealing with problems relating to the eyelids, tear ducts eye socket, and face adjacent to the eye.
An ophthalmic (eye) plastic and reconstructive surgeon (also called an oculoplastic surgeon or an oculofacial surgeon), is an ophthalmologist -- a medical doctor and eye surgeon -- who has completed additional fellowship training in plastic surgery as it relates exclusively to the eyes and their surrounding anatomic structures.
Only one organization certifies the training, credentials and experience of ophthalmic plastic surgeons -- the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. In order to qualify as a Fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, a surgeon must:
- Be a board certified ophthalmologist by the American Board of Ophthalmology, the oldest certifying medical Board in the U.S.;
- Have completed a two-year fellowship program in ophthalmic plastic surgery (oculoplastics);
- Have published in the field; and
- Have passed a rigorous oral and written examination.
A board certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Marshak is one of a very few specialists to also complete a two-year Cosmetic Surgery Fellowship under the auspices of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. This dual training enables him to successfully assess and address patient concerns regarding their eyes and eyelids, and provide exceptional technical and aesthetic results.
The Society has more than 500 members worldwide. Dr. Marshak is the first and only Fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery to practice full-time in the Palm Springs-Rancho Mirage area.
